Review: Becca Under Eye Brightening Corrector

 

 

Today’s post is a review of the Becca Under Eye Brightening Corrector, which I purchased during the Sephora VIB sale in April. I was originally going to buy the Urban Decay Naked Skin Color Correcting Fluid, but changed my mind after I saw stashmatter’s review of the Becca corrector and how much she loved it.

My undereye circles have always been a major concern in my beauty routine, and I’ve always found I have issues covering them up completely with concealer only. Even with the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, which everyone loves (myself included), I find that it doesn’t always cover my dark circles perfectly, sometimes it clings onto the dry patches under my eyes, or it makes my undereye area look cakey. Correctors seem to be in the spotlight in the makeup world this year, and I was excited to try one to see if it would help cover my dark circles better.

The Becca Under Eye Brightening Corrector is a super creamy, emollient product, and I find it to be a bit sticky. The creamy texture allows the product to sit on my skin without caking up, and even acts as a primer of sorts to make my concealer apply smoother.

The product contains light reflecting pigments that help to brighten up the undereye area without adding any shimmer to the face. The glowiness definitely shows when you swatch it on your skin – the first photo is a straight-up swatch where I applied the corrector without blending it in – super brightening, right? The second is the corrector blended in a little more – still super brightening! Not only does the glowiness of the corrector do a great job at highlighting the under eye area to make it look brighter and less tired-looking, but the peachy shade of this corrector really helps to neutralize the blue/purple shades under my eyes so that the concealer can better cover the dark area.

I wanted to show how this product actually looks under the eyes – you can hover over each image to see which products I applied in each photo. It’s pretty clear that the concealer applied with the corrector underneath makes the undereye area look a lot brighter, and covers my dark circles a lot better than when I only use concealer. I also had a very dry undereye area the day I took this photo, and the concealer clung to my dry spots, whereas the corrector helped smooth over the area.

So, I love the performance of the product in terms of it actually doing what it claims to do, but I was having issues. The first few days I started using this corrector, I got black smudges under my eyes halfway through the day, even though I had set my under-eye area with powder. I thought that maybe because the texture is a bit stickier than what I’m normally used to, that I hadn’t set it with enough powder. The next day, I applied more powder under my eyes, and the area ended up looking very cakey. Panda eyes are no good, but neither is a cakey under eye area!

Then, I realized I didn’t know if the transfer was from my mascara or eyeliner, so I started using different combinations of the mascaras and liners in my rotation to narrow down the culprit (It probably would’ve been WAY easier to narrow it down if I wore each product separately every day, but I didn’t want to go to work with liner on and but no mascara! Looks rather funny.) I was using three different liners (Stila Stay All Day Liquid Liner, Urban Decay 24/7 Pencil Liner, and the Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof liner) and two different mascaras (Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara and the Majolica Majorca Lash Expander Edge Meister) to test out where the issue was coming from. After about a week and a half of testing, I finally caught the culprit: the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara. Regardless of what liner I was using, I would only get black smudges when I used that mascara. I’m not surprised – although the current tube I was using had been good to me, I’ve had problems with a different tube of the same mascara flaking and smudging on me in the past. I stopped using the mascara (it was getting old anyways) , and the problem stopped. However, I started using a new mascara recently, and the problem started up again. It is frustrating!

Overall, I really love the performance of this product, but I just haven’t quite found a solution to making sure that my mascaras don’t transfer onto my undereye area when I use the corrector. I think I may need to use a waterproof mascara with this!
