Engagement Shoot Makeup Look

I have mostly either been doing makeup posts or wedding posts, but today’s post is both of these topics combined! We just had our engagement shoot this past Sunday. Since we got engaged by the water, we wanted to reflect that and decided to do the shoot at a lake in the Rocky Mountains.

A few months ago, our wedding photographer asked us if we were okay doing the shoot at 6 in the morning on a Sunday, since apparently the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset is considered “golden hour” for photography. Without thinking, we said, “Yeah, sure, whatever makes the photos look the most flattering!” We are both morning people, but when it actually came down to it the morning of, it was a little tough. Since we had to be at the lake by 6 am and the drive out there is roughly an hour and a half, I couldn’t get my hair and makeup done that morning since no one would be available to do for me at 3:00am (lol). With hair, I needed serious help as I am completely useless with doing my own hair. I got my hair done Saturday afternoon and basically tried to not sleep on it that night.

With makeup, I’m obviously comfortable doing it on my own (seeing as how I blog about makeup and all), but I usually do a pretty natural, light look that doesn’t often show up well in pictures, so I knew I had to do a slightly more elevated version of my usual makeup. I used the picture below as a loose inspiration for what I wanted to do. As gorgeous as this is, this look was done for a beauty pageant, and I didn’t want my face to look quite as done up, since I feel like engagement pictures are a little more casual.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to take pictures of my eye makeup until late afternoon. At this point, I already had my makeup on for over 12 hours, so it was perhaps not quite as vibrant as when the makeup was first applied. My real eyelashes were drooping, and my falsies were starting to come off on the end. I also didn’t realize until editing the photos that the liner on the lower lashline was smeared at this point. Close-up shots are not very forgiving at all!

My go-to look for special occasions is using the Urban Decay Sin all over the lid, with a medium-dark brown of my choice in the crease. UD Sin is one of my all-time favourite shades –  the pinky champagne shade creates such a bright and romantic look and is probably pretty flattering on most skintones. However, I’ve used it so many times for special occasions that I just wanted to change it up. I decided to go with taupe for my look this time.

1. First, I fill in my brows using the Anastasia Brow Pomade.
2. Prime the lids. I used the NARS Pro-Prime Eyeshadow Base (which I forgot to include in the photo!)
3.  Beginning with my transition shade, I ran Inglot 337 through my crease.
4. Starting from the inner part of my lids, I layered the taupe shade in the Tarina Tarantino Magical palette with MAC’s Satin Taupe, and packed it on my lid up until the middle of my eye.
5. Next, I used Inglot #378 to define the outer V and create more dimension.
6. Using a pencil brush to get more precision, I then placed Too Faced Dark Chocolate over Inglot #378 to deepen up the shade, making sure I never went completely over #378, since I used #378 as a shade used to help blend the outer V colour and crease colour together.
7. Urban Decay Virgin was used as my browbone highlight and inner corner highlght.
8. I lined my top lid with the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper, but did not do a winged look, just tapered it off into a short point at the end.
9. For the lower lashline, I lined with Urban Decay’s 24/7 Pencil Liner in Stray Dog, a brown-taupe with a pearl finish.
10. I curled and applied the CoverGirl LashBlast Clump Crusher mascara, then applied Quo falsies in the style Natural.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Crave, Darling, and both shades mixed.

1. I first prime the skin with Shiseido Glow Enhancing Primer.
2. Next, I spot conceal with the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer.
3. I dab some of the Urban Decay foundation all over my face, then blend it in using the dampened Quo blending sponge.
4. Apply a thin layer of the Becca Under Eye Brightening Corrector in the under eye area, then dab some of the NARS concealer on top, blending it in.
5. Bronze the face lightly with the Too Faced Chocolate Milk Soleil Bronzer.
6. Apply blush. I used blushes from my Tarte Off the Cuff palette. Crave was a little too bright and pink for what I was going for, and Darling was too neutral, so I mixed the two to get a peachy shade.
7. Set everything with the Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder.
8. I had been contemplating using a highlight on my cheekbones, but was a little worried that it would make my skin look oily in photos. The decision was made for me when I ran out of time and we had to leave the house before I could apply a highlighter!

I’ve never been into lipsticks much, but for some reason, I had the hardest time deciding on a lipstick shade! I was leaning towards using my holy grail MLBB, the Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Liar, but 1) I’ve gotten tanned this summer and the shade is slightly too light for my skin tone at the moment, and 2) I wasn’t sure if the shade would wash me out on camera.

Because I switched had two different outfits, I ended up going with two lip colours. For my more casual outfit, which consisted of a dark top and pants, I went with Bite Beauty’s Shiraz, a warm mauve-plum. This is still somewhat of an MLBB shade for me, but it’s a bit darker than Liar. It pulls slightly brown-toned on my lips as a result of my natural lip colour. They have since discontinued the Luminous Crème formula and replaced it with the Amuse Bouche line.

My other outfit was a bright dress in a vermilion shade, so I toned down the lips with Shiseido Perfect Rouge in RD #732- this was a new purchase in August! Pink is a really difficult colour for me to wear, and I don’t have any pink lipsticks that suited my skintone and didn’t pull Barbie pink on me, so it was about time I bought one! This pulls a peachy pink on my lips.

Essie Gel Couture in Sew Me

I had originally wanted to wear a milky pink on my nails because that’s always a classic wedding look, but I actually own very few pink creme polishes because they all somehow look unflattering on my skin tone. I was really glad Essie had this shade in their Gel Couture range. It’s a nude peachy-pink, and looks a lot better on me than the milky pinks.
