December Haul & Low-Buy Results

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you all had a most wonderful and happy Christmas spent with your loved ones, and a fun New Year’s Eve ringing in 2018. May this coming year be a very creative and successful one for all of us!

Today’s post is on my December low-buy, as well as a few beauty products I received from my friends and family for Christmas. You may be surprised that I don’t often receive makeup as gifts – maybe because my loved ones know I already own too many products! With my increased time spent at the mall shopping for gifts plus Boxing Day, I thought I would have gone a bit crazy with my spending, but I actually didn’t do too badly. I managed to resist all of the Boxing Day sales on beauty products (25% off at MAC, 20-40% off at Colourpop, Boxing Day items at Sephora) by telling myself that I didn’t need anything.

Oribe Grandiose Hair Plumping Mousse – $46

I had a haircut earlier this month, and my hairdresser used something on my hair that made it super voluminous. I asked her what she had used on my hair because it smelled good and gave my hair so much oomph, and she said “Oh, we just started carrying a brand called Oribe. I used this volumizing mousse on your hair”. I knew from watching beauty videos that the brand Oribe is expensive, but my #1 gripe about my hair is that it is so flat at the roots, so anything that gives it volume, I need in my life! I have lost my damn mind buying a $46 hair product. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to achieve the same results with it at home on my own, so I feel like I wasted my money on a very expensive hair product.

Delectable Dream Cream Ultra Nourishing Hand Cream Set – $14.97

I saw this while grocery shopping at Superstore and snagged it up, as I’ve heard many good things from fellow bloggers about the Delectable hand creams. I’ve had the gingerbread scented one on my bedside table for most of the month, and the first night I wore it, my husband said, “why do you smell like spoiled chicken?” I laughed so hard, I almost cried. I don’t LOVE the gingerbread scent, but I don’t think it smells like spoiled chicken either (what does spoiled chicken even smell like? That is oddly specific). I bought the Laura Mercier Decadent hand creams back in October, but they’re kind of fancy so I want to savour them – I feel like the Delectable hand creams will be used more for my every day hand cream.

The Body Shop Vanilla Chai, Frosted Plum, and Frosted Berries Body Butters – $10.50 each

While I bought the Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Cream last month, it’s a little too fancy (aka expensive) for me to use on a daily basis. I bought these body butters at 50% off on Boxing Day to be my every day body butters. They’ve had the Frosted Plum and Frosted Berries scents for a few years now, but I have actually never tried them!

Even though the Sephora VIB sale was only a month ago, I still had SO many things I wanted to get at Sephora when this coupon for $20 off a $50 purchase rolled around. I was also itching to buy something because for the first time in my life, I was close to reaching Rouge status. I was only $35 away, so I thought why the heck not. However, I was well-behaved – the majority of my purchase was for my husband!

Jack Black Beard Lube – $42 for 473 mL (not pictured)

My husband told me he was starting to run low on his Jack Black Beard Lube that a friend of mine had purchased for him for Christmas last year. Instead of using my coupon to buy something I wanted but didn’t need (like an eyeshadow palette or highlighter, ahem), I bought him a 475mL bottle of the Beard Lube for $43.

Sephora Collection Crystal Nail File – $12.50

As per usual, I refused to pay for shipping, so in order to reach the minimum spend, I repurchased a Sephora Collection crystal nail file. This is actually something that I needed but kept forgetting to buy. I had previously owned the same one from Sephora (in pink) and somehow my mom managed to snap it in half! It’s still useable but my mom kept it, and so I’ve been going the last 8 months or so without a nail file.

The Sephora order also came with some samples (Boscia Tsubaki Cleansing Oil-Gel, Living Proof Nourising Oil, Origins High-Potency Night-A-Mins), as well a Sephora collection mini brush for reaching Rouge status. I also redeemed points to get a Bite Beauty Matte Creme Lip Crayon in the shade Leche.

LipSense Lipglosses

A friend of mine gifted this to me for Christmas. This is so perfect, since I’ve been really curious to try the LipSense products, but didn’t know any sellers. I’m both afraid and excited to try it – I want to see if it lasts as long as it’s supposed to, but I’m also scared it’s going to completely dry out my lips!

Environ Skincare Samples

Another friend of mine gave me a set of sample products as a side gift – it is a set of skincare products from a company called Environ. My friend only uses their products, and she has ridiculously perfect skin. I’m hoping the samples will do the same for my skin, hehe!

Too Faced Sweet Peach Palette

As promised, I did not buy any palettes this month, but I DID put one on my wish list and my husband bought it for me. Is this considered cheating? I’m going to say no. I’m super excited to start using this but haven’t had the heart to dip my brush and ruin the pristine shadows yet. Does anyone else have this problem?

In total, I spent $128 on beauty products this month. My budget for this month was $100, and since I didn’t buy any makeup, I technically spent $0 on my low-buy, haha! What did you buy in December? Did you succumb to all the fantastic deals and get yourself some awesome products?

  1. I can sooo relate…these sales have been so hard to ignore! Ps-don’t be afraid of lipsense. My lips feel like butter after using this! I think the hydration comes from applying the gloss all day. Just don’t forget to gloss up 🙂

Happy and successful New Years to you too!

  2. Agh I love the holiday body butters from the Body Shop; their mango scent is by far my favorite any other time of year. The LipSense products are iffy for me some of the shades are fine and others burn my lips when I put them on. Either way they do last for quite some time as long as you apply the gloss consistently!
    Happy New Year xx

    • Ooh, I love the mango one! Satsuma is my favourite even though it’s so overpowering, haha.
That’s really weird that some shades burn your lips while others are fine! Thanks for the tip about applying the gloss consistently – I’ll have to remember to do that.
Happy New Year to you too, love!

  3. I have a review of LipSense on my blog if you want to check it out. It really does work. But the sellers claiming you should only use LipSense every single day is a bunch of malarkey. Oh and using the gloss on top to seal the lip color is essential. Without it your lips will feel super dry and uncomfortable.

    • The friend who gave it to me said she found that because she doesn’t use it every day and uses other products in between, it doesn’t seem to last as long. But who knows! I’m sure all of us react differently to products. Sounds like the gloss is universally a must, though! Thanks for the tip, I’ll definitely check out your review!

  4. Oh man, bummer on that Oribe Mousse – on the other hand, at least you don’t have to repurchase such an expensive item!

I’ve been looking for that Delectable Dream Cream Hand Cream Set! Can’t find it anywhere – probably all gone now. But um “spoiled chicken” smell… so is he saying he’s not a fan of the scent? 😆

I saw Safiya Nygaard try LipSense and it scared me! I hope you’ll have a positive experience!

Nah, it’s not cheating if someone buy you a palette. Totally fine!

Congrats (I think?) on reaching Rouge status! How does it feel to know that you have spent $1k at Sephora in 2017!? Just think, now you don’t have any minimum dollar spend to place an order. You can literally redeem point perks and they will ship it to you free of charge! 😛

    • The Oribe mousse is probably a good product – it’s just user error haha. You’re right though, at least I won’t have to repurchase! That teaches me to never buy expensive hair products again…I have no dang clue how to do my hair!

Oh my gosh! If I find the Dream Cream set, I’ll pick one up for you. Hmm yes, I am assuming that he was not a fan of the spoiled chicken scent, LOL.

Ugh, Safiya Nygaard’s video is what scared me off of LipSense! Yet I’m still curious about it, because of all the mixed reviews.

I am ashamed at myself for reaching Rouge status, LOL. It’s not even worth it because the Sephora points program isn’t good. I also think the whole free shipping thing is super dangerous for my wallet, but good point about being able to redeem points without having to buy anything!

  5. Happy New Year!
I’m still curious to try Too Faced. Once I finish my primers, I want to try their primer, and one of their eyeshadow palettes! 🙂 I have some repeat buys to get but otherwise I am restraining myself a bit as I’m off to Hong Kong next month and I know I will buy lots of goodies then!

    • To Faced can be a bit hit or miss, but I think their permanent eyeshadow palettes are generally good!
Oooh, I would love to see what you haul when you get back from Hong Kong! There’s a high probability that I’m going this year, and would love some ideas! 😉

  6. Spoiled chicken?😂 Men aye? If I used a chocolate body wash and my grandad was over, he’d say the body wash smelt like sweat😂 Personally I don’t see it. I have the Sweet Peach palette. I’ve got to try it out properly yet😊 x

  7. All my friends and family know I have too many beauty related products, but I always get gifts within the beauty category hahaha 😀 My local bodyshop were having up to 50% their christmas collection, and really wanted to try the chai body butter, but I know I already have too many body lotions so didn’t end up getting it.

    Liked by 1 person

    • That makes sense, they know you lie beauty products so they’ll naturally gravitate towards that for your gifts!
You’ll have another chance next year! I’m using the chai one right now and I’m not sure how I feel about it. I think I’ve discovered that I’m not a huge fan of spice scented bodycare.

  8. You did a god job sticking with your low buy! It’s hard this time of year. I laughed when you said your husband thought the gingerbread scent smelled like spoiled chicken. That is oddly specific! hahaha
I don’t think it’s cheating to put a palette on your wish list, gifts never count 🙂

    • Thank you! I find low-buys aren’t too bad until you hit the holiday season…then all the holiday releases come out and you suddenly want to buy EVERYTHING. Re: the spoiled chicken, I know right?! What does spoiled chicken even smell like? LOL.
Darn, in that case I should have asked for more palettes this year 😉

  9. Great haul, glad to hear you had a good Christmas and New Year!
Spoiled Chicken? That’s too funny! Looks like a lovely set though, I hope the scents are a little better!
I think it’s a good job Boots doesn’t show you what you spend or give any tiers, I don’t wanna know what I spent there over the years!
And no, if you didn’t buy it definitely not cheating!

    • Thanks Rachael, I hope you had a good Christmas and New Years too!
The rest of the scents are really nice! Just not sure about the gingerbread one – I think I’ve discovered this year that I’m not a huge fan of spice-scented lotions, but that’s just a personal preference.
Does Boots have a points program even if they don’t have tiers?

  10. I picked up one of those Delectable hand cream sets too – they are one of my favourite everyday hand creams!

Congrats on making Rouge this year! This is the first year in many that I haven’t and it feels a little odd, although it’s not like I utilized any of it’s “benefits” anyway (except the free shipping occasionally).

Ugh that sucks about the Oribe mousse – I can never seem to replicate my hair after being at the salon either, so annoying, especially when you invest in the products they used!

    Liked by 1 person

    • I’m pretty sure I first heard about the Delectable hand creams from you and Stashy! They’re SO good.

Ugh, I’m gonna try NOT to make Rouge this year, it’s not worth it! Like you said, other than the free shipping, the benefits aren’t really that good.

VERY annoying! Like, we did our hair the way we saw the hairdresser do it, how come the results didn’t come out the same?! haha. That teaches me never to get sucked into their expensive products again.
