7 Products I Regret Buying

Today, I wanted to share with you a list of products that I regret purchasing. It’s the first ‘regrets’ post I’ve ever done, and I think it’s because I try to do a lot of research on products before I make a purchase. By the time I buy it, I know I’m most likely going to love it! However, it’s usually the impulse purchases that fail for me, and a lot of the products below fall into that category. The other main reason I usually regret buying a product is when the shade doesn’t work out for me.

Arbonne Smoothed Over Lipstick in Peony – $32 CAD

A friend of mine hosted an Arbonne event at her house maybe two years ago. I’m so not into MLMs (multi-level marketing) but none of the other girls were buying anything, so I picked this lipstick up – perfect chance for me to try something new anyways, right? The colour is gorgeous and the formula felt really nice and comfortable when I swatched it on my hand. However, it feels drying on the lips, especially after one or two hours. What kills me is that this was around $32-$34 (I can’t remember exactly) – I could buy two MAC lipsticks, a Bite Beauty lipstick, or almost a Marc Jacobs lipstick for that price! I’ve only worn this a handful of times, and I’m going to give it another chance this summer. If I still don’t reach for it, then it’s being decluttered.

Makeup_Geek_Highlighter_Swatches
Terrible swatches but I just wanted to illustrate how yellow Electrify is compared to all of the other MUG highlighters I own. From left to right: Makeup Geek Highlighter in Electrify, Lit, Mightnight Sun, and Luster.

Makeup Geek Highlighter in Electrify – $20 USD

Don’t get me wrong, I love the formula of the Makeup Geek Highlighters (I mentioned them in my 8 Products I Love That No One Talks About post) but why did I buy this shade? It’s a straight-up lemon yellow. The funny thing is the other three came in a bundle, and I love them all, but this one I specifically picked out on its own. I’ve kept this around in hopes that I will use it at some point. If by the end of this year I rarely pick it up, then I think it’s another product going in the declutter pile.

ILNP Nail Polish in Flower Girl – $14.99 CAD

I’ve only tried four ILNP polishes and have really enjoyed them so far. This one is on my list of products I regret purchasing because while it’s pretty and performs well, it’s not particularly unique like all of the other ILNP polishes I own. These nail polishes are on the more expensive side (at least for me), and I’m not sure if this shade was worth the price for me!

Bumble & Bumble Thickening Volume Spray Pre-Styler – $34 CAD

I bought this last August when I had my hair done, because I told my hairdresser that I can never get any volume into my hair, and she said that this spray would help with that. However, this really does nothing for my hair at all – it’s like spraying water into my hair. It’s been half a year and I’ve barely used any of it!

Oribe Grandiose Hair Plumping Mousse – $46 CAD

Similar to the Bumble & Bumble spray, I bought this from my hair salon, because she was able to give my hair so much volume when she applied this mousse into my roots. It smells absolutely divine, but it doesn’t do anything to my roots when I use it myself. The failure of this product is probably most likely due to user error. Regardless of the reason, I regret buying it, especially because it was so expensive and it doesn’t work.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser – $27

I bought this because I loved the Ultra Facial Moisturizer, but I don’t like the cleanser nearly as much. First of all, it smells faintly of chlorine and recalls bad memories of swimming lessons as a kid. My biggest gripe with this is that it doesn’t seem to do much for me in terms of cleansing my face. I use this as the second step of my double-cleanse, and I never feel like this takes off all of the makeup and cleansing oil fully.

Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum-Bum Cream – $57

Okay, hear me out before you shoot me for this one. I know everyone raves about this cream, and I do get the hype, I really do. It smells so freaking delicious, and it’s a solid body cream. BUT it’s not amazing in terms of performance – it doesn’t do anything that a normal body lotion doesn’t do as well. I used it for about a month before I realized it’s not quite thick enough for me to use in the winter, so I’ve saved it for the summer. I don’t have cellulite so I can’t really test out its claims that it’s skin-firming, but I’m a non-believer of topical creams being able to help with cellulite. Considering it’s almost the same price, I would rather have spent this money on the Kiehl’s Creme de Corps Soy Milk and Honey Whipped Body Butter, which is so thick and moisturizing and smells just as good.

What product do you regret buying?

  1. I agree that the bum bum cream is better suited to summer, but I do love it then 🙂
I’m so like you in that I always end up falling for the sales pitch in the hairdresser / spa and end up spending money on products that never work the same for me 😦

  2. OMG Arbonne! Uhg have I had the same experience! My friend also hosted a party and unfortunately I was given a US catalogue to look at instead of a Canadian one by accident, so the prices looked SO much cheaper! Well imagine my surprise when I decided to purchase a $50 mascara!!!!!!!! And guess what, I hated it and didn’t feel I could return it. I basically threw it out away because it just made me angry every time I looked at it. Definitely the biggest product regret OF MY LIFE. I also purchased one of their blushes, which was also expensive, and isn’t anything special, but it’s fine. I think my total purchase ended up being $110 or something like that. What a waste! And I’m a student too, what was I thinking lol.

I’m sorry to hear that the Bum Bum cream was a disappointment, although I could totally see it not being moisturizing enough during the winter.I’ve only tried small samples. It’s too expensive I think, and I’m happy with Body Shop body butters which I have like 6 tubs of lol so need to work through those a little more.

    • Omg! How did they even screw up giving you a USD catalogue? $50 for a mascara…NO THANK YOU. $110 hurts…imagine what you could’ve bought at a place like Sephora for that price!

It’s nice but not worth the price. I also go back to the Body Shop body butters time and time again – they’re so affordable and reliable! But sometimes I get sick of them and have to try something new every once in a while, ya feel? haha.

      • Uhg I know that was soo lame. I so would have rather spent that at Sephora lol. Bath & Body Works came out with some body butters around christmas that were really nice, not sure if they still have those. Often the Bath & Body Works Lotions bother my skin because they are a bit too fragranced, but I found the body butters to be great! They also had a cool almost whipped texture which I thought was interesting.

  3. Arbonne is soooo expensive! I hate those parties where they pitch you a bunch of products and then give you an order form, I almost always feel guilty if I don’t buy. Plus Arbonne requires you to buy a membership.
I have a Bronzer from them that’s lasting me forever and a mud mask that I actually like, but not enough to go through another Arbonne party 😄
It’s a shame about the lipstick, it looks like a pretty colour!

That highlighter is like lightning! So yellow…

I’ve thought about buying the bum bum cream but I also don’t have cellulite so I thought it would be a waste. Plus I can get a large The Body Shop body butter for the price of the mini!

    • Exactly! I bet you they probably get a chunk of their sales from girls like us who feel guilty and just end up buying something. It’s good that you don’t totally hate the products you got from them, though! Oh my gosh, I totally forgot that you have to sign up to buy products. I think I must have bought through my friend because I definitely did not sign up for Arbonne…

I can see it working on some olive-y skintones and (maybe) some deep skin tones! For most people it would probably just be too yellow, haha.

Yes, the Body Shop body butters are tried and true!

      • Haha most likely! When I placed my order the membership applied to two people, so one person had to buy it but they could share it for the order. But two people couldn’t split the cost of the membership as full ownership applied to only one person. It’s so dumb!! I think it was like $15 or something like that.

Oh absolutely, I’m sure it would be lovely on deeper skintones!

  4. Argh Arbonne. I refuse to get sucked into that! Someone from my old work knew I like beauty stuff and gave me (more like forced them onto me) a bunch of samples hoping to lure me in. I tossed the samples away instead of even temping myself. Sorry you got guilt into it!

I can totally understand what you mean about regretting expensive nail polish purchases for shades that aren’t unique. I feel the same. BUT, if the quality is great, I’d be ok to have a pricier version of a basic shade.

Oh too bad about the Kiehl’s cleanser. I do like it but it’s not my favourite and I only used it in the mornings, not to remove my makeup.

I’m soooo glad I didn’t fall into the bum bum cream hype! But it does smell dang diggity delicious! The people who think topical creams can get rid of cellulite… I got some magical elixirs to sell you! 😆

My biggest regret right now is… the Dyson hair dryer! 😮 My friend bought it for me as a thank you gift and I refused to accept it unless I gave her some money toward it. So I paid a portion. I’ve been using it for about 3 weeks and… I’m so underwhelmed! It’s not as quiet as I thought it would be. It somehow makes my hair flatter yet frizzy? It’s somewhat more lightweight than my other hair dryer (Babyliss) but not significantly so. The air flow is just ok – I use the diffuser attachment which isn’t great. The only thing that’s better about the Dyson dryer is that it is nice and hot. I’ve just gone back to my other dryer and I’ll just keep the Dyson as a backup. Can you believe that!

    • You probably wouldn’t even have been tempted if you tried their stuff – I don’t think they’re very good. I had no idea what Arbonne was until I got to the “party”. Probably should have done my research beforehand!

LOL @ your elixir comment. Maybe if the company came out with a body butter that is the same price as the cream…I would totally be all over that. Smells so yummy but not worth it.

Whaaaat. I can’t believe the Dyson hair dryer is underwhelming! Sad that you’re keeping an expensive hair dryer as a BACKUP. Just sad!

  5. I love posts like this!

I’m not into the MLM stuff either. My cousin’s daughter sells Fields & Rodan. That stuff is WAY expensive! She sent me some samples. I really liked the lip rescue stuff but was NOT paying $85 for it. Nope. No way.

Product I regret buying is the Urban Decay eye primer. I had a bad reaction to it and it made my lids super dry and itchy/irritated.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Oooh, I’ve done some research on Rodan & Fields because a friend was trying to get into their products! It seems like a legit brand (founded by the same people who started Proactiv) but overall it seems like the general consensus is that their stuff is good but overpriced, and that you can find products that perform just as well, for a fraction of the price. $85 for a lip product?! No thank you…

Oh no! That’s a super bad reaction to the UD primer. Don’t you just hate it when people rave about products and it just totally doesn’t work on you?

      Liked by 1 person

      • Yeah exactly that. Good stuff but WAY overpriced.

I have a friend who had the same reaction I did to that UD eye primer. So it wasn’t just a fluke thing. I’ve never had that kind of reaction to any other eye primer I’ve tried.

  6. I just wanted to leave a quick note about Arbonne as it seems everyone commenting has had a pretty bad experience with it.

A membership is not necessary to buy products, however you do get 20% off products and it lasts 12 months before you have to renew (if you want to). Your consultant should have told you that they have a 40 day refund policy if you don’t like the product you ordered, you can basically use the whole thing and send back an empty bottle and they will still refund if it is within the 40 days.

You can buy straight online and if you don’t have a consultant, the website will just connect you to the closest one in your area and you don’t actually have to have anything to do with said consultant.

The reason the products are so expensive is because they are gold standard and if sold at a retailer, the RE9 range would total over $1000 dollars. The products also last much longer than store bought as all ingredients are sustainably sourced, vegan certified and do what they say they are going to do.

Yes, I am a consultant, but only became one because I fell in love with the products first and noticed a big difference in my skin. I truly believe these products are wonderful, but also understand that everyone is different and have their own opinions. I am not trying to change anyones minds but just wanted to give a little more information that should have been shared at those ‘parties’ you attended from the start. It is all about education and no one should ever be pressured into buying products if they aren’t interested.
