New Beauty Releases: What I’m Buying and What I’m Not

Hi everyone! As per usual in the beauty community, we’ve been seeing rapid-fire new releases from brands. In today’s post, I’m sharing my thoughts on some of the new releases we’ve been seeing, and whether I am thinking about purchasing them. Read on to hear my thoughts!

ColourPop x Kathleen Lights Zodiac Collection

When ColourPop first released the teaser for this collection, I was so. excited. However, when I saw the actual palette, I was a little disappointed. The palette does look nice, but it just wasn’t what I was expecting. I know a lot of palettes these last two years have had really interesting colour combinations, and I feel like this is one of them. I know Kathleen chose the shades based on the actual colours of the zodiac, which is actually pretty cool. I like about half of the palette – I was just personally expecting a lot more smokey shades, bronzes, and jewel tones, and I feel like if the palette had looked like that, I would have been more inclined to buy it. I feel like I’m still undecided, but leaning towards a no. All of the other items (lip products, highlighters, liquid eyeshadow) I wasn’t really interested in from the beginning.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Norvina Palette

This technically has been out for a month already, but since most Canadians probably won’t get their hands on it until it’s released at Sephora, I’m categorizing it as a new release. Okay. I don’t actually know how I feel about this palette. Everyone flipped out when ABH first released the teasers, and I was one of those people. I pretty much exclusively wear neutrals on my eyes, but the one colour I do branch out and wear is purple. Long story short, I was excited about this palette, BUT the more I look at this palette, the more I’m not sure. First of all, if you take away the three purples in this palette, it’s more or less a basic neutral palette. I don’t know if I like all of the shades in this palette, or if I could get a complete look using this palette. Once it comes out at Sephora, I’m going to swatch it in stores and make a decision from there.

BTW Super Coverage Concealer_1

Too Faced Born This Way Super Coverage Multi-Use Sculpting Concealer

I’ve been using the Born This Way foundation for the last few months and I enjoy the coverage, but Stashy mentioned that the Born This Way Naturally Radiant Concealer was very light. I prefer medium to high coverage when it comes to concealers, so I think this might actually be a good choice! Right now I don’t need a new concealer, but I am putting this one on my list of products to buy eventually – maybe it’ll happen during the VIB sale. I have been very interested in concealers lately because of my issues with hyperpigmentatiaon, so I’m excited to give this one a try.

Becca x Chrissy Teigan Collection

This isn’t a new-new release, but I’m talking about it anyways! Chrissy Teigan’s new collaboration with Becca consists of a Bronze & Glow powder, 3 shades of the Glow Gloss, and a glow body oil. At first, I was a little interested in the glow powder, but ultimately I feel like I wouldn’t get much use out of it. It’s kind of a glowy bronzer/highlighter mix, and I know I wouldn’t have any way to fit it in my routine. I prefer something that is either a highlighter or bronzer, not something that could double as both. The body oil is a no for me, considering I haven’t been interested in any of the body oils that have been released this year. In terms of the Glow Glosses, they look really beautiful – a lot of my trusted blogger friends/YouTubers seem to rave about the Glow Glosses – I don’t use glosses often though, so I need to think on this one.

becca skin love 2

Becca Skinlove Collection

I believe this new release is available only on Beautylish and the Becca website. The collection comes with a foundation in 24 shades, a Glow Elixir which is a priming serum, and a Glow Glaze Stick. I don’t know – the aesthetic of this collection seriously appeals to me, but I’ve just somehow always had this association that makeup brands can’t do skincare well, even if it’s a skincare-makeup hybrid. All of these products look nice, but I know I’m not interested in the highlighting stick, and as pretty as the glow elixir is, I’m still not really sure what its purpose is. I might be interested in purchasing the foundation eventually, even though it apparently has a matte finish, and I’d have to see how matte this settles first.

Too Faced Cheers to 20 Years Collection

In celebration of hitting their 20 year milestone, Too Faced has released a fun, glittery collection. It includes an eyeshadow palette which includes 10 of their original eyeshadow shades and their modern counterparts, 10 throwback metallic glitter lipsticks, a limited-edition glittery packaging of their Better Than Sex mascara, and a Glitter Spritzer for the hair (which was done in collaboration with Drybar). Uhhhh…no to all three. I think this collection is a cute idea and very Too Faced-esque, but I feel like I would have liked this collection when I was 10. Now, not so much.

Too Faced Tutti Frutti Collection

There’s not a ton of news about this release as of yet, but Too Faced and Trendmood has been dropping a lot of hints recently. Now, there are actually few products I’m actually interested in, but of course it just so happens that I can’t get my hands on it since it’s an Ulta exclusive. If I did have access to this collection, out of all the products we know of so far, I would be interested in purchasing a few of the split-pan blushes, the lipglosses, and the Dew You Foundation, which is infused with watermelon and cucumber. Does that not sound amazing?!

Kylie Cosmetics Birthday Collection

In celebration of Kylie Jenner’s 21st birthday, she is releasing a collection that includes five lip sets, an eyeshadow palette, a highlighter, and a bag. I love the packaging of this collection and the shades in the palette actually look really cute, but they’re not shades I would wear on an every day basis. Overall I wouldn’t get this collection since I don’t support the Kardashians, but brand aside, I’m not interested in the products themselves.

Are you interested in any of these releases? Are there any I didn’t include on my list that you are thinking of buying? Let me know in the comments!

  1. There seems to be a trend with Zodiac themed makeup stuff lately? Not really my thing now but I think back in high school I would have been really into it.

I’m curious about that Too Faced Born This Way Scupting Concealer too! I’ve seen a few reviews on it and they’re all positive.

Hmm foundation infused with watermelon and cucumber – never thought I’d want to try something like that but it does sound like it would be refreshing and lightweight.

I’m so out of the loop on the new releases. I have nothing to contribute. 😆 I saw that BeautyBlender came out with their own line of foundations? And there’s some controversy about the shade range offered…

Actually, I’m looking forward to Fall launches – my favourite things are always in those collections. 🙂

    • There definitely seems to be a Zodiac trend right now, doesn’t it? I can’t tell if it’s a coincidence or not – both the Wet n Wild and ColourPop Zodiac collections came out around the same time, and I would assume that the collection was in production for months prior, which would have made it difficult to copy one another. But I digress!

Doesn’t the foundation sound nice? Too bad they didn’t release it in early summer – the scent would’ve been so nice and summery.

Yes, there is controversy about the Beauty Blender foundation shades! I totally forgot about the release of that collection.

I’m looking forward to fall releases too! Funnily enough, brands have shown sneak peeks of their HOLIDAY collections but not their fall collection…

  2. My zodiac Palette is taking FOREVER to arrive! It just cleared customs today and I ordered it on the release date. sigh…
I’m totally with you on the Norvina Palette. I was so excited when I saw the teaser but the more I look at it now the more meh I am on it. The shades do look really pretty but they aren’t the most interesting.
I’m curious about both the Becca skincare line too. I’m also not sure how I feel about buying skincare for a makeup brand, maybe it will be really good but I will wait to hear reviews.
That Too Faced collection is waaay to glittery. Sparkly packaging is totally not for me, I’m not ten and if I was I couldn’t afford it! I’m feeling the tutti fruiti collection though, I wish it wasn’t going to be an Ulta exclusive 😦

    • It’s painful how long ColourPop takes to ship to Canada! Fingers crossed it arrives in one piece this time…

I’m really glad I’m not the only way that feels that way about the Norvina Palette! At this point, I feel like I’d rather get the Soft Glam palette, although god knows I don’t need another neutral palette.

Completely agree with you on the two Too Faced releases! Why couldn’t the 20th Anniversary collection be an Ulta exclusive and the Tutti Frutti collection available at Sephora?!

      • It’s been two weeks since I placed my order 😭 I dont know what’s taking so long 😞

They’re both bad for being shades you might have in other palettes, though I do really love my soft glam palette 😊

That would have been perfect! I wish we had ulta here

        • I think my last order took two weeks, too. It’s painful when you just want to play with your new products! Did you buy anything else other than the palette?

I wish we had an Ulta here too, but I think my wallet is happy we don’t have one!

          • No, just the palette this time. My order finally arrived! I checked my mail box right before heading out of town and it was there. I haven’t had a chance to play with it yet though. Everything takes forever to ship in canada!

That’s a good point, I would spend waaay too much money at Ulta.

  3. Not interested in any of those really. The Norvina palette looks pretty but I saw Makeup Revolution has basically a dupe. If that pops up at Ulta I’ll probably get that as theirs is only $7. There really isn’t anything new that’s catching my eye. I do think I want the UD Born to Run palette though and I might treat myself to that for my birthday (which is today but I don’t get paid til Friday).

  4. Unfortunately the Norvina palette is online only at Sephora! Isn’t that disappointing? Anyways, I ordered it so we will see how it is. I’m feeling pretty optimistic about it.

From what you are describing of your expectations of the Zodiac palette, it sounds like you are describing the UD Born to Run palette or the CP X Shayla Perception palette. Maybe you should consider either of those?

I’m slightly glad that the TF Tutti Frutti collection is an Ulta exclusive, because it slightly hinders me from getting the products. While we can still order from them in Canada easily, I don’t really want to pay customs and I want the option to return the products. This is the first collection from TF that I have been interested in in a while though! Maybe a good sign of things to come? That Birthday collection is a total mess though, in my opinion.

    • Ah, I totally read the news wrong! I thought the Norvina palette will be available in stores on August 17th, but I read it again and it’s only for US retailers.

I thought about getting the Born to Run palette, but I’ve bought a few LE Urban Decay palettes before and always ended up decluttering them. Maybe I’ll take a look at it in stores…

That’s exactly it, I refuse to pay for customs so therefore I “can’t” get my hands on the Tutti Frutti collection, haha. Totally agreed though, it’s the first collection in a long time that actually looks interesting!

        • I thought about that right after replying to your comment, haha! Hopefully they’ll have a super spend your points event soon. I’ve been thinking of spending my points on a cologne for my husband, but I think I could buy both the cologne and the palette if they had a super spend your points event!

  5. Initially I was really interested in the Norvina palette but once I got a good look at it, it was a no from me. I already have a couple purple palettes and I have many neutral palettes so I don’t need it. Oddly enough I still kinda want the Soft Glam though lol

I definitely want to give that TF concealer a try – especially if it can replace my Tarte Shape Tape. I’m all about a full-coverage concealer too (I honestly don’t get concealers that aren’t full-coverage – what’s the point?)

I’m also very intrigued by that Too Faced Dew You foundation but I’m concerned about the scent. If it smells like cucumber I’m out! 🙂

    • I still wish I could swatch the Norvina palette – I feel ya, I’m leaning towards the boring Soft Glam palette too, it looks gorgeous, haha!

I totally know what you mean about there being no point to concealers that aren’t full coverage – why?? It would be so nice if the TF concealer could replace the Shape Tape – easier access for us!

You don’t like cucumber?? I’m astounded!
