Best of Beauty 2018: Makeup Edition

Hello everyone, and Happy New Year’s Eve! I hope you all have a great time celebrating tonight, whether it’s going all out at a large New Year’s bash, or staying at home and chilling on the couch with some friends and some wine.

Favourites post are probably my all-time favourite types of blog posts to read from other bloggers, and today I’m sharing my own roundup of favourite beauty products of the year. Most of these are not new releases; the way I categorize my “favourite beauty products” posts is that I include things I discovered during the year, or purchased late last year and didn’t really get a chance to use them until this year. If there was a category I didn’t discover anything I loved, then I left it out of this post. I will also list runner-ups in each category if there are any. First on the agenda is my favourite beauty products of the year!

Eyeshadow: Tarte Chrome Paint Shadow Pot

When I reviewed these in the spring, my overall comments on these were how stellar they are. These are ridiculously metallic and pigmented – I feel like they make my jaw drop every time I use them. The texture is slightly crumbly, but I’ve never had any problems with fallout. I only wish that there was a bigger colour selection, as most of the shades available seem to be variations of gold and bronze.

Runner ups are ColourPop Super Shock Shadows and the Too Faced Just Peachy Mattes palette. After years of wanting to try the Super Shock Shadows, I finally had a chance to test them out, and they live up to the hype. It has a really interesting bouncy texture, the pigmentation on all of the shades I tried were impressive, and the line offers a great colour selection. I reviewed them here, and I definitely highly recommend them! The Just Peachy Mattes also came high on the list because the palette ended up surprising me a lot. The palette consists of really beautiful red-based matte shades that go well together, and it’s a more wearable palette than I initially presumed. My review of the palette can be found here.

Highlighter: ColourPop Super Shock Highlighter in Flexitarian

I’ve mentioned this highlighter on my blog a few times now, but I’ve known since seeing swatches of it online that I needed to have it in my life. I purchased this in the middle of the year, and have been having a love affair with it since. This cool white-champagne shade is an extremely strong, reflective highlighter and is not for the faint of heart. Similar to the Super Shock Shadows, this cream highlighter has a bouncy texture that is easy to blend out, so you don’t have a crazy white stripe on your cheeks. I didn’t review this specific shade, but a review of the Super Shock highlighter formula is here.

Runner up is the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Parisian Lights, which I reviewed earlier on in the year. It is pink and has the Eiffel Tower on it – enough said on why I bought this. Other a more serious note, it’s a stunning pinky highlighter with a peachy shift to it, and I particularly love it for the spring and summer. I’m at the point where if I use it any more, the Eiffel Tower pattern is going to disappear, so now I don’t know what to do!

Lipstick: Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Liquified Lipsticks

I discovered these liquified lipsticks in August when they were part of the Weekly Wow sale at Sephora, and now I own three of these. They are so creamy and pigmented, and have a nice sheen to them as well. They aren’t liquid lipsticks, but literally feel like they took the Bite Amuse Bouche bullet lipsticks and turned it into a liquid. I will be reviewing these in the new year!

Runner up is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Glosses, which was introduced to me by Nova of Super Nova Beauty. These are so pigmented and are not sticky like the glosses I remember from the “olden days” – I’m a convert now!

Blush: Glossier Cloud Paints

Glossier is one of the brands that I wanted to try in 2018, so I was happy that I got the chance to do it. The one thing I wanted to try the most was these Cloud Paints, which get so much hype on Instagram. If I am honest, I was a little hesitant about these because I’ve never really loved cream blushes. I find them really difficult to use, because a lot of them don’t blend out easily or look patchy once applied. However, these Cloud Paints are so fantastic. The formula is so light and easy to blend, making it hard to overdo it. They look very natural – even the shades that look crazy! I will also be doing a review of these in the new year.

Brows: ColourPop Brow Boss

After Always Cleia reviewed these earlier this year, I bought this eyebrow pencil mostly for travelling purposes, so that I wouldn’t have to haul around the brush that is needed to use my ABH Dipbrow Pomade. I ended up falling in love with it. The fine tip of the pencil makes this is so easy to use for more detailed work like drawing in brow strokes, or getting a sharp tail at the end of the brow. I have pretty thick brows so I tend to go through brow pencils like water, so a big bonus for the Brow Boss is that it’s very affordable.

Mascara: Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara

This is an old photo because I don’t own this product anymore, but my favourite mascara discovery of the year was the Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 mascara. I almost never go for high-end mascaras because I feel like drugstore mascaras can do just as well, but this one surprised me. No smudging, no flaking, and great volume and length – pretty much everything I look for in a mascara, this was able to do! My review is here.

Face Palette: Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit Unlocked Palette

I didn’t really know what category to put this under, so I’ll just call it a face palette. This gorgeous palette costs a pretty penny, but I have no regrets buying it because it makes my skin look so beautiful. The effects of this blush are subtle, but it makes my complexion look so healthy and “lit from within”. There is no peoduct in here that I don’t love, but as I mentioned in my review, the standouts are the Golden Bronze Light bronzer and the Mood Flush blush. Lately, I’ve also really fallen in love with the highlighter!

That is all for my roundup of 2018 makeup favourites! Please leave a comment and tell me what makeup products did you fell in love with this year!

  1. I fell in love with the Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter! ❤️ I’d really love to try the Bite Amuse Bouche lipsticks, but I can’t get them here in the UK! I’ll definitely pick some up whenever I next go to America x

    • I still need to try Charlotte Tilbury, it’s one of the brands I want to try this year! The Flawless Filter looks really beautiful. It’s really too bad you can’t get your hands on Bite Beauty – I hope you get a chance to buy from them soon!

  2. Love favourite posts too!

I have heard so much hype surrounding the Glossier Cloud Paints but have been hesitant to try them out. I look forward to your review 🙂 but it’s good to know that it performs really well. I actually really love cream blush formulas for the spring/summer.

I fell in love with two items this year; the Lancome Monsieur Big Mascara. I get a crazy amount of volume with that mascara it almost looks like I’m wearing false lashes. Second is the Ambient Lighting Edit Volume 4. It’s my first Hourglass purchase and I’m so in love with this palette. I can see why so many people enjoy it! I really wanted the Ambient Light Edit Palette that you have as well, but it sold out so quickly! Lucky you got your hands on it!

    • I don’t know why, but I’m hesitant to try Glossier skincare – their Cloud Paints though, I would highly recommend, especially if you like cream blushes for spring/summer!

I’ve heard SO much about the Lancôme Monsieur Big…might need to splurge and get that this year. The Ambient Lighting Edit Volume 4 is absolutely stunning! It was too light for my skin tone, otherwise I would’ve wanted that one, too!

  3. I love the Glossier Cloud Paint in Dusk that you got me! I was just wearing it yesterday – I’m thinking of picking up other colours. Do you like Beam or Dawn better? I definitely want Storm!
I tried the Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes you sent me and unfortunately, it doesn’t hold a curl on my lashes even over my normal lash primer. It’s so odd. I love the packaging of the tube though – so unique and doens’t roll off the table! 😛

I’m so late to the game but I discovered my love for Too Faced eye shadows. I now own 3 of their Chocolate bar palettes (I received the original for christmas) – the formula just wears so well for me for some reason.
Another better late than never discovery was the MAC Prep + Prime Eye Base. My previous HG was the Nars one but I don’t like the wand applicator. The MAC one works just as well and it’s in a squeeze tube.
Skincare items that I loved were the Belif The True Cream Moisturizing Bomb and Moisturizing and Firming eye cream – both are now staples in my skincare routine.
A couple of very recent discoveries were drugstore foundations – I went a tiny bit crazy in December and bought a bunch based on rave reviews online. I love: Catrice HD Liquid Coverage foundation, Physicians Formula The Healthy Foundation, and L’Oreal Infallible Shaping Stick Foundation. They all provide different finishes and for different purposes but I like them all equally!

    • It’s you!! I’ve missed you, haha!

Aww, too bad the mascara didn’t work for you, but I’m glad you liked the Cloud Paint! I just bought Dawn and Storm recently and haven’t tried Dawn yet, so I can’t give you an answer on whether I prefer Dawn or Beam. Storm is really nice though! At this point, I feel like any of the shades would be nice, haha.

Wow, you own 3 of the Too Faced palettes now, I am impressed! That’s very interesting (but good!) that you find they wear well on you. For me, they’re pretty on par with other brands – pretty good but nothing out of the ordinary.
Thanks for sharing your faves! I’ve missed that since you stopped blogging. Belif is a brand a lot of people have been talking about, so I’m curious. I’ve heard SO many good things about the PH Healthy Foundation – am super curious about it! Haven’t heard that much about the other ones though, I’ll have to do more research on them!

      • You know what? I pulled out the Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes mascara again, after not using it for a couple of weeks – and it is SO MUCH better now. I guess letting it “age” really made a difference. Now it is more volumizing and keeps a curl better. It went from a 6/10 to 8/10 mascara! This is why I can’t give reviews on products after only a week or 2. 😛 Thanks again for sending it to me! ❤

    • Hmm, I would say that the Tarte shadows are a lot more metallic/foiled than ColourPop’s Super Shock Shadows. Not to say that the SSS aren’t beautiful, because sometimes you’re just not going for a metallic look!
