May Monthly Makeup & April Update

Hi, friends! Since we’re at the end of the month, today I’m sharing a post on an update of all the products I focused on using in April, as well as sharing what I am rotating in during May.

April was a semi-fail in terms of using the products I picked, and you’ll see why. First off, let’s go through the ones that I completed a whole month with. I chose Too Faced Sweet Peach palette as my eyeshadow palette to focus on, and was obsessed with it all month! It made me wonder why I don’t reach for it more often. The blush I chose for April was Luminoso, which I’ve been dying to bring out all winter long. It gives the most beautiful, luminous finish and went perfectly with the eyeshadows. I need more of the Milani blushes in my life! My lipstick for the month was Bobbi Brown’s Crushed Liquid Lipstick in the shade Give a Fig. This was a product I bought at the beginning of the year when I started my Monthly Makeup series, so I was busy focusing on other lipsticks and had only worn this once or twice. I knew I enjoyed the formula from the handful of times I had used it, but April gave me a good opportunity to really focus on and enjoy this lipstick! It’s not in the picture above because I can’t find it anymore?! I kept it on my desk at work all month long, so I’m not sure how I misplaced it.

Now for my fails: I was supposed to include the ColourPop Super Shock Shadow in the shade Nillionaire in my makeup focus, but I ended up switching it with the Tarte Chrome Paint Shadow Pot in Frose, which I thought paired better with all the peachy shades in the palette. I did use Frose for the entire month, but it just wasn’t the product I had originally chosen. For my highlighter, I originally picked the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Parisian Lights to round out the peachy look, but I ended up not being able to bear using it and getting rid of the beautiful embossed pattern on the powder. Instead, I replaced it with the Hourglass Vanish Flash Highlighting Stick in Rose Gold Flash. Similar to the Bobbi Brown lipstick, I bought this highlighter at the beginning of the year when I started my Monthly Makeup series, so I hadn’t gotten much of a chance to test it out fully. Putting it in my Monthly Makeup series finally let me thoroughly enjoy this highlighter, which is a strange but beautiful mix between a subtle and strong highlighter.

The Ordinary’s Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres was the only skincare product in my Makeup Focus project this month. This actually a product I use every other day, but I ended up neglecting it for half the month. My skin has been really dry on and off all month for no apparent reason, and I didn’t want to risk the Vitamin C serum tingling too much or burning my skin like it has in the past. The biggest fail was Physician’s Formula’s Spotlight Illuminating Primer – I think I only used this once or twice during the month. Besides the crazy dryness, my skin was doing weird things this month (ugh, what else is new…) and I didn’t want to add any primers in fear of exacerbating the issue.

Onto my picks for May! I love May because it’s my birthday month and because it’s the month when we really start seeing the full effects of spring, so I’ve decided to “celebrate” by choosing some of my favourite products from my collection. It makes me extra excited to use these products this month!

Okay, so just after I said I chose my favourite products for May, I have to say that I don’t necessarily think this is a favourite. While I absolutely LOVE how pigmented this palette is, I actually don’t reach for it as often as I should. I’ve put it in my May Monthly Makeup to give it a chance to shine!

MAC Eyeshadow

I think part of the reason why I don’t use Soft Glam often is because the shades are a bit more smoky and glam than what I’m used to wearing to work. I feel like every time I pull Soft Glam out for work, it looks over the top, particularly the lid shades. I’m putting MAC’s Woodwinked (middle row, second from the right) into my Monthly Makeup to give me a more neutral option for work days.

This was supposed to be in my Makeup Focus last month, but I replaced it with the Tarte Chrome Paint Pot because it fit better with the Too Faced Sweet Peach palette. I ended up using it once near the end of April and it reminded me how much I love it, so I’m excited to be including it in my May focus.

This is one of my top 3 highlighters in my collection, so of course I had to pick it for my birthday month. I’ve preached on and on about this highlighter so many times; I love metallic, shiny highlighters, and this one is the shiniest of all of them.

It’s been a while since I’ve talked about this blush, but similar to the ColourPop highlighter, this is one of my top three favourite blushes. The powder is so finely milled and pigmented. It always looks flawless on the skin! I also feel like this shade will go beautifully with the eyeshadows.

I have gone on and on about how much I love these lipsticks, so it’s a must-have for a month where I’m focusing on using my favourite products. This shade doesn’t exactly scream spring, but I think it will work really well with the eyeshadows I chose!

I’m putting this back in my routine since I want to use it up but neglected it last month. My face is still strangely dry, but hopefully my skin will go back to normal in the next few days so that I feel comfortable enough to start using this again.

I use this only when I curl my hair, and it’s the perfect product for creating soft, beachy waves. I abandoned this in the winter because I just can’t force myself to get up an extra 10 minutes earlier when it’s cold outside to curl my hair, but I brought this back out to use in March. As long as I focus on using this texture spray this month, I will be finished by the end of the month.

That is it for today! Are you focusing on using any products this month?

  1. I really like this idea for a series (if I haven’t already told you hehe). I do something a little similar once a week as I found I was reaching for the same things over and over and forgetting about the really nice things I hadn’t used in a while. I think you selected a very cohesive group of cosmetics that will pair well together! I’m a spring baby too except well, our spring is in October haha. Woo hoo for your birthday month 😀

    • Rotating your products every week is such a good idea, that way you don’t get bored of using the same products over and over again, and you also get around to using more products from our collection too! LOL it’s so funny to think that we’re both spring babies but our birthdays are on opposite ends of the year! Thanks, girly!

  2. I don’t know why I haven’t used my soft glam much either. I made it my Pan that Palette for this year and I’ve barely touched it! May is a good month to pull it out, I’ll try to use it too!
I’d love to try that texture spray! I’ve realized that my hair is at that length where I absolutely need to style it, or else it just looks messy.
Good luck with your May focus!

    • Haha good luck getting use out of the Soft Glam this month! Isn’t it funny how it’s such a pretty palette yet we don’t reach for it much?
I would really recommend the texture spray! I’ve also heard the Kristin Ess one is good, and that one is half the price, I think!
      Thanks, Cleia!

      • I know it’s so strange!! I wanted it so bad and budgeted for it but then I just forget about it. I guess I need to stop buying exciting new palettes.
I’ll take a look for the Kristen Ess spray, I’m always looking to save a few bucks. Thanks!
