Best of Beauty 2019

Hi friends! Today I’m sharing a type of post that I personally enjoy reading the most: yearly beauty favourites! I love seeing what other people discovered and enjoyed using during the year, because you find some really good recommendations. I, ahem, purchased a lot of stuff in 2019, and as a result have added some really standout products to my collection. Just as a note, these are not necessarily products that were new on the market in 2019, but they are all products that I discovered during the year. If I didn’t find a new favourite in a certain category during the year, I did not include it in this post (notice that I’m missing a favourite mascara, concealer, etc.) Without further ado, let’s get to it!

Nudestix-Naughty-n-Spice-Blush-Tatcha-The-Silk-Canvas-Primer.jpg

PRIMER: Tatcha The Silk Canvas Primer

I caved on buying this primer after hearing so. many. people. raving about it. This gives my skin a flawless base underneath foundation, and feels more like skincare than makeup. Used without base makeup, it blurs your imperfections; with base makeup, my foundation sits beautifully on top of it. I will be doing a review of this in the new year.

BLUSH: Nudestix Nudies in Naughty n’ Spice

2019 was finally the year I got to try Nudestix! The formula of their Nudies blushes is creamy and easy to blend out with my fingers. The stick format makes it a great travel companion, as it’s not necessary to bring a brush or sponge. I also feel like this shade in particular would be flattering on a wide range of skin tones. I can’t wait to collect more of these in the future! My in-depth review of this product is here.

Runner up is the Cover FX Monochromatic Blush Duo in Warm Honey. This was love at first use for me. The formula is so buttery and pigmented, without being too easy to overapply or overwhelming on the cheeks. The reason it isn’t my favourite is because I just bought it in November and have only used it twice, so I don’t think it’s enough usage to make it a favourite. However, I think it might be a good contender for 2020’s favourites.

YSL-Touche-Eclat-Le-Teint-Foundation-Hourglass-Highlighter-Rose-Gold

FOUNDATION: YSL Touche Eclat Le Teint Radiance Awakening Foundation

This foundation gives the most beautiful dewy finish without making your skin look overly shiny. It feels lightweight and looks natural, even though it has medium coverage. My dry skin really seemed to like it, as it doesn’t cling to dry patches (although I have to note that in December I had really crazy dry patches which I believe may have been a reaction to a skincare product I had been using, and this did emphasize the dryness. But to be honest, I’m not sure there’s any foundation out there that doesn’t when your dry patches were as bad as mine). I shared a review of this foundation here.

A close second is the Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter (which is technically base makeup but not really a foundation). True to its name, this gives an almost filtered look on your complexion, blurring any imperfections. The only reason I didn’t include it as my favourite product of the year is because I feel like it’s a “nice to have”, not a necessity (not that any makeup is a necessity, but you know what I mean…) compared to a foundation.

HIGHLIGHTER: Hourglass Vanish Flash Highlighting Stick in Rose Gold Flash

This highlighter formula is so unique and to me feels like it’s a dichotomy of experiences. It’s a cream formula but has an almost powdery texture to it; it looks natural on the skin, yet still gives my cheekbones a noticeable glow. I’m so confused by this highlighter, but it’s absolutely stunning, so I’m not complaining! Being an Hourglass product, it’s definitely on the pricey side, but so worth it.

Sydney-Grace-Cream-Shadows

EYESHADOW: Sydney Grace Cream Shadows

I received one of these in a mystery bag from the brand in July, and fell so hard for the formula that I bought another five during Black Friday. They are insanely pigmented and so easy to blend. They also don’t budge, and still look amazing on the eyes after a full day of wear. Now that I have tried a bunch of shades, I’ll be doing a review in the new year.

Close seconds are the Sydney Grace pressed shadows as well as the Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerize shadow in Marie Antoinette. The Sydney Grace pressed shadows (review here) have a buttery formula and have stellar pigmentation, and the Eyes to Mesmerize shadow (review here) is so creamy and leaves my lids with this effortless sheen to my lids. It makes me feel like one of those models in Charlotte Tilbury’s Instagram Stories!

NYX-Epic-Ink-Liner-Excel-Pencil-Powder.jpg

BROWS: Excel Powder & Pencil Eyebrow EX

Excel is a Japanese brand, and I purchased this brow pencil when I was in Japan in 2018, but I didn’t start using it until the summer. This eye pencil is a bestseller in Japan and has won the Cosme award (kind of like Japan’s version of the Allure awards), and for good reason. Girls in Japan favour a natural brow, not the Instagram brows we were sporting in North America for more of the 2010’s. As a result, this fills in my brows really naturally. The formula isn’t too creamy or too stiff, like some pencils tend to be – it’s just right!

EYELINER: NYX Epic Ink Liner

After searching high and low for this liquid liner earlier in the year, I finally got my hands on it at a London Drugs, and it was worth the search. The ink is very matte and black, and doesn’t budge all day. I think I’m 7 months into using this eyeliner, and the tip hasn’t frayed either, which is always a big problem I run into with liquid liners. I’m so impressed and will definitely be repurchasing this over and over again!

ColourPop-Just-a-Tint-Lip-Pencils.jpg

LIPSTICK: ColourPop Just a Tint Lip Pencil

I’ve been having a sheer lip moment for the last half a year, and I’m SO GLAD that matte liquid lipsticks aren’t trendy anymore (my dry lips hated them!) I’ve been wanting to try these lip pencils since they were released in the spring, and I’m so glad they were finally added to my collection. I have been reaching for them non-stop ever since I bought them in November! They feel incredibly hydrating on the lips, like you’re wearing a lip balm, and they leave your lips with a juicy, glossy tint. Even though they’ve only been in my collection for two months, they’ve quickly risen become my favourite lip product of 2019. I will be reviewing this shortly!

Good-Molecules-Rosehip-Oil-Farmacy-Honeymoon-Glow-Timeless-C+E+Ferulic-Acid

EXFOLIATOR: Farmacy Honeymoon Glow

I wrote a review of this chemical exfoliator back in the summer. I think I actually bought at the end of 2018 but didn’t have a chance to use until 2019. At 14%, it’s quite a strong acid, but I actually find it very gentle on the face and doesn’t sting. Although it’s gentle, I find it very effective as well. My skin texture has generally improved since using this, and always feels soft and looks glowy.

SERUM: Timeless Vitamin C + E + Ferulic Acid

When I ran out of my Vitamin C serum and was researching a new one to try, I realized a lot of people on Reddit said this was their favourite due to the powerhouse combo that is Vitamin C combined with Vitamin E and ferulic acid. I took a chance on it, and this has now become my favourite Vitamin C serums. It’s everything I want in a Vitamin C; it’s gentle and not drying, and I actually see results with this in terms of decreasing my hyperpigmentation.

FACIAL OIL: Good Molecules Pure Cold-Pressed Rosehip Oil

This was gifted to me a few months ago by Good Molecules, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. I had the Fourth Ray Beauty Watermelon and Tsubaki oils in my collection at the time, and I found they weren’t doing anything for my skin. Recently, I had a bout of really dry, flaky skin, which I think was a reaction from a new product I had been trying. I’ve spent the last month trying to repair my skin, and this oil (along with the two underneath) has been instrumental in getting it back to normal. I layer this at night over moisturizer or sleeping mask (or both!), and my skin has slowly healed.

Belif-True-Cream-Moisturizing-Bomb-YTTP-Superberry-Dream-Mask.jpg

MOISTURIZER: Belif The True Cream Moisturizing Bomb

This has probably been my favourite moisturizer discovery in the last few years, so much so that I recently ran out to repurchase it when my skin was freaking out and with severe dry spots – I knew this no-BS moisturizer would help repair my moisture barrier. It’s lightweight, yet it’s deeply hydrating, even for dry skin. I have a review of the Moisturizing Bomb here.

FACE MASK: Youth to the People Superberry Hydrate & Glow Dream Mask

I discovered sleeping masks a few years ago, and me and my dry skin have since been obsessed with trying all of the sleeping masks out there. This one in particular is so creamy and hydrating. It doesn’t feel greasy or heavy, and it sinks right into the skin overnight, leaving me with soft, supple skin when I wake up in the morning. I did a review of this mask here.

Verb-Texture-Spray-Verb-Ghost-Oil.jpg

HAIR PRODUCTS: Verb Ghost Oil

My hair is longer than it’s ever been, and I find it often looks frizzy after coming out of the shower, and it also gets knotted up really easily for no damn reason. I use this hair oil to keep my hair silky and thus less prone to frizziness or tangling. This does just that, without weighing my hair down or making it feel greasy.

Verb Texture Spray

I’ve used so many different brands of texture spray, and while the majority of them are really good, this one takes the cake. I found I’ve enjoyed the Verb texture spray the best because it’s a lot grittier and gives more texture to my hair, which holds the curl better.

That’s all for my 2019 favourites – a fairly small but mighty list. What have you been loving this year? Let me know what amazing products you discovered in 2019!

  1. I love those ColourPop lip crayons too. But that NYX liner ended up on my sh*t list because it started to feather & bleed like crazy after awhile. Was so disappointed as I really liked it at first. Luckily I discovered the Milani Eye Tech Extreme, which I like even better.

  2. Still need to try those Nudestix Nudies so bad! The Good Molecules oil sounds very intriguing since I’m really getting into facial oils myself; might have to check it out!

  3. The YSL Foundation ended up being one of my favourite discoveries of 2019 too! I have dry skin too and I love how this product doesn’t emphasis small patches of dry skin 🙂 thank you for getting me onto this foundation!

  4. I love reading these kinds of posts too! It’s fun seeing what everyone’s stand out products of the year were.

The Colourpop Lip Tints are definitely in my top 10 for 2019, they’re so comfortable! I’d love to try that Tatcha primer and the Farmacy Honeymoon glow at some point this year.
