Project Pan Update

Today’s post is the first update on my Project Pan, which I started at the beginning of January. I’ve decided to space out my check-ins and do them every two months, so my next update will be in April, and then the last one in June.

While I want to get as much use out of these products as possible, my approach to this Project Pan was to pace myself. I knew, particularly with makeup, that I would go crazy if I had to wear the same things day in and day out for six months straight, so I came up with a schedule that would allow me to switch up my products while still getting use out of my Project Pan items. I usually wear makeup 6 days a week, Monday through Saturday, so I promised myself that I would use my Project Pan makeup 5 days a week, and then I could switch it up with another product on the sixth day. This has been working out pretty well, I think!

Now onto my update:

Kiehl’s Mango Lip Balm

I’ve been keeping this in my purse and typically use it once or twice a day as I’m leaving the house for work. It is getting used, it’s just slow going. I’m likely not going to be able to finish this by June, especially because I don’t really like this lip balm, but at least I will have gotten some use out of it.

Bite Beauty Luminous Crème lipstick in Shiraz

This is one of the only products in my Project Pan where I can visually see a difference in how much product I’ve used. I’m so close to the end, you guys! I’ll definitely be able to finish it even by the end of March. I’ve been wearing this to work every day; it normally takes me forever to finish a lipstick because I’ll apply it in the morning and then won’t reapply for the rest of the day. Since I’m trying to finish this lipstick up, I’ve started reapplying after lunch and I’ve actually been enjoying that routine.

Jack Black Lip Balm x2

I have two Jack Black lip balms that I’m trying to get through, one that sits on my desk at work and the other on my bedside table. It seems like I’m making headway on the one from my bedside table, but the other one has a ways to go yet.

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Poured Crème Highlighter in Moonstone

When I first opened this highlighter, I thought that it would be fairly easy to use up. Three months in, and it feels (and looks) like I haven’t even made a dent in it! As much as I would like to hit pan, I love this product so much that I kind of want it to last forever. This is one of the products on this list that I think I won’t ever get sick of.

NYX High Definition Blush in Taupe

You know how when you pan a product, the edges of where you panned keep crumbling off? That keeps happening to me with this product, which is why there’s all these broken bits in it. It’s really annoying but it’s still usable.

Ugh. Doesn’t it just hurt you to see broken powder products?

Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Paaarty

This blush shattered on me during an overnight trip. There were two weeks in which I didn’t use it because we don’t have any rubbing alcohol at home to put it back together, but I was able to eventually re-press it. Unfortunately, the classic Tarte blush pattern on the top is gone, but it still performs the same, which is what matters. Visually, it seems like I’ve barely used any of this up – boo!

Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Liquid Makeup

Instead of using this once a week like I used to, I have been using it every day, and I feel like I’m making really good headway on this! When I first started doing Project Pan, the foundation level was where the word “weightless” is on the bottle, and now it’s where “peptide infused” is. I should be on track to finish this by the end of April at the latest!

A/G Conditioning Mist Detangling Spray

As I mentioned in my original Project Pan post, I am trying to use this up because I neither love it or hate it and just want to finish it. I spray this leave-in conditioner on my hair after every wash, but it doesn’t feel like I’ve gone through much. I think the weigh-in will definitely let me see how much I’ve used!

Project_Pan2a.jpg

Bath & Body Works Waikiki Beach Coconut

I’ve been wearing this consistently since I started my Project Pan, but I still forget to apply perfume every so often. I would say that I’d call it a good week if I remember to use it 3-4 times a week. It’s going to be a sad day when I finish this perfume – I absolutely LOVE the scent.

Project_Pan10

Urban Decay 24/7 Dual-Ended Pencil Liner

I feel like I got some decent use out of this, although it’s hard to tell – I should have sharpened the pencil before doing the weigh-in, haha! The Project Pan has encouraged me to use the matte brown side, Demolition, a lot more than I normally would. I do think I’m on track to finish it by June!

Urban Decay 24/7 Pencil Liner in Underground

This eyeliner barely moved in the last two months! I normally use this in my lower lashline because it’s a shimmery brown, and sometimes that’s an “extra” step for me – nice but not needed, and often gets cut out of my beauty routine when I’m short on time (which is most of the time). I’m going to spend the next four months making more effort to use this more often!

Shiseido Ibuki Refining Moisturizer Enriched

Gonna be honest, I have not even touched this moisturizer. I’m going through a bunch of other skincare right now and don’t want to keep flip-flopping between products because my skin probably won’t like that. Hopefully in March, I can start shifting my focus to this moisturizer.

Finally, I did my weigh-in and here is what it looks like at the end of February:

Polished_and_Inspired_Project_Pan.jpg

The biggest difference in weight, as one would expect, was with the liquid products such as the detangling spray, perfume, and foundation. My powder products didn’t even budge! Maybe my goal shouldn’t be to pan them, but to just get the weight to go down 0.001 kg from when I first started, hah!

Let me know if you are doing a Project Pan this year! I would love to read all about it.

  1. Hi! I just discovered your blog and am obsessed! I love the idea of trying to use up all of your products. As a beauty blogger and makeup lover, I have so many products I love but don’t use very often, so this is a greay way to use everything before purchasing anything new. I love the Urban Decay Naked Skin foundation and the Tarte ‘Paaarty’ Blush. Both look so beautiful on the skin. I love how high quality your photos are and I will definitely be back for the update! xoxo

    • Hi there! I think I recently discovered your blog as well 🙂
I feel overwhelmed with all the products I own, sometimes it’s just nice to take a step back and try to use up some of the products! Project Pans are challenging – you should definitely try it!
I’m glad you’re also a fan of the UD Naked Skin foundation and Tarte Paaarty blush!

  2. Those Tarte blushes are almost impossible to hit pan on – I used a large one almost every time I used makeup last year and I didn’t even hit pan 😡so frustrating but I guess that means they are good value?

Lip products are also hard to use up – I’ve been working on this lip balm in a tin for over a year too and I probably have at least another 6 months of it and I’m sooooo done with it. I’m determined to finish it though.

I used the same approach for my project pan last year (use my PP items for 5 days and items of my choice 1 day a week) and it worked well – it was so exciting when I got to use my non-PP makeup lol. I’m feeling about the same now with my Monthly Makeup Focus project- at the end of each month I can’t wait to use new stuff.

You’re doing great on your Project Pan!

    • Oh yes, I remember the Tarte blush you had in your Project Pan last year! This isn’t even a regular sized one, it’s a deluxe sample from last year’s birthday gift! Still probably won’t be able to finish it…haha.

When you’re using a lip product for over a year, it’s really easy to get sick of it! Good luck finishing that lip balm, my friend 😉

Hahaha, it IS exciting when you get to use non-Project Pan makeup! The Monthly Makeup Focus is a good idea – you know that after a month, you can move onto a different product.

  3. I haven’t done a project pan, I would probably get bored of a product if I focussed on it too much, but I have decided to rotate my products on my new dressing table so I use everything I have rather than just using one or two things all the time. It’s amazing how little the weight’s changed on some of those, I wonder how much of the weight is the packaging, it might be that the 0.001kg is all that would change when you finish them. Doing great so far, it’s always nice when you can actually see differences like with the lipstick and liquid products.

    • That’s a great idea to rotate products, it really lets you use all of your products! The bad thing about Project Pan is that you’re so focused on using up the products in your PP that you neglect other products.

I just watched a video where a girl had a basket on her desk of her “weekly makeup” – makeup she picked out for that week, and would only wear those products that week until she got to choose new items the following week. It’s such a good idea!

I did think about the fact that none of my products would go down to 0 in weight because of the packaging, but I never really thought about the fact that maybe 0.001kg is how much the product could change! Very good point there…

      • I’ve just hand a look through all of my makeup and realised more than half of it is eyeshadow! I’m definitely keeping a certain number out and rotating them to see which I will actually use.

I think 0.001kg is 1g so a lot of them might not go down much before you finish the , depends on how much is in each though.

  4. The same exact thing happened to my Tarte Partaay blush!😔 As far as project panning goes, for things that I really want to finish up like perfumes, lipbalms, creams, and liquids, I always put them in my bathroom. Right after getting out of the shower the first thing I do is put on whatever is near me. I’ve been using this method to finish up all of my gifted BBW lotions because I don’t really like them but they were gifts and I want to finish them up. The same thing with lip balms. I also use them when I do makeup tutorials (I apply them before and after I put on lipsticks). Conditioners go by so quick because I leave them in since I have curly hair and they act like gels on my hair. Powder products are by far the hardest to get through though. Good luck panning!💕

    • Aww, isn’t breaking makeup the worst?!

Finishing powders is so satisfying because they take SO LONG to get used up, but it’s nice panning liquids because you get through them faster, so it almost feels like you’ve accomplished more. That’s a great idea to put them near you so that you actually use them up.

      Thanks for reading!

  5. I’m the opposite with lip balms, they last me 5 minutes😂 So sad about your Tarte blush! I hate using products once they’ve broken and I’m too lazy to fix them back up! The B&BW’s Waikiki Beach scent is amazing. Stashy sent me the spray and I was sad to finish it x

  6. You’re doing so good on this project, that first lipstick is so close!
It breaks my heart to see that broken Tarte Blush 😦
I love that you do a weigh in so you can get a tangible measure of how much you’ve used up, that’s a great idea!

    • Haha, thanks Cleia!
Broken makeup is so heartbreaking lol – I wonder if only beauty lovers feel like that.
I definitely stole the idea of weighing my products from Stashy, although my food scale doesn’t measure in small enough increments to be very precise.

  7. Woohoo look at the BITE lipstick! The end is nigh…
I secretly love it when I hit pan on a product and the sides start crumbling… CHEAT, lol 😆
Maybe you can crush the Tarte blush and put it into a jar rather than re-press it? And use it as a loose blush?
I’m not good at remembering to apply perfume daily either. I’m lucky if I manage to get all my clothes on right side out and not backwards to get out the door… 😛
Pencil liners take AGES to use up. I have a MUFE one that’s discontinued and I keep dreading about using it up. But it’s still going strong 2 years later…

Yay on the weights going down! Progress – slowly but surely…
Good job and keep going! I enjoyed reading your update! ❤

    • Sorry for the late reply, I’m trying to catch up on all of my comments!

Is it cheating when you keep the crumbling bits in there to use up? I think it’s only cheating when you throw the crumbles out, haha!

I already re-pressed the Tarte blush – I did think about crushing it all up and using it as a loose blush, BUT I don’t trust myself to not get it everywhere…

LOL, me too girl. It’s a struggle to get myself out the door without forgetting something every morning.

Okay, I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one who struggles with finishing pencil liners! They feel like they should be used up fairly quickly because you have to sharpen them, but somehow that’s not the case.

  8. Yay it’s neat that you’re doing your check-ins! (I’m back by the way!) 🙂 I don’t think I’ve really listed out my Project Pan items but there are definitely a few things I want to finish this year. I have two primers towards its finishing line (or so I hope), an everyday foundation that has about 25% left, a perfume, a powder…it’s a good mix this year since last year wasn’t all that special in terms of panning!

  9. Nice! Making good progress on some of the products I see! I just finished my own three month project pan and blushes are so hard to use up, even if you use a not very pigmented one like I did.
